I've been sewing since childhood and quilting for nearly a decade. Last fall I decided to design my first quilt. I wanted a design that had a vintage feel and warm cozy colors. The Patches of Friendship quilt pattern is the result.
Designing My First Quilt
It's a 78 1/2" x 78 1/2" quilt suitable for a confident beginner. It was a FUN quilt to design, make, and quilt.
There are a number of 9 patch blocks in this quilt.
The Versatility of the 9 Patch Block
I love the versatility of the 9 patch block. You can do so many things with it. Depending on the colors you use and where you place them in the block, you can come up with some fun pattern combinations.
Creating the 9 Patch Chain Block
The 9 patch chain block is a variation on the 9 patch. Here in this quilt, 3 mini 9 patch blocks are used when making it. If you look closely, you can see the mini 9 patches forming a chain in the photo below.
Creating The Friendship Star
This quilt has lots of Half Square Triangles, too. Four HSTs are used to make each Friendship Star in the quilt. I've learned a lot of time-saving techniques over the years quilting. You can learn how to make 8-at-a-time HSTs and make them so FAST!
